PROFILE

Øystein Birkeland has for decades been one of Norways leading cellists with an extensive career both as a soloist and a chambermusician. Throughout his career he has performed as soloist with several leading orchestras i.e. Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Moscow Soloists, The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and the Latvian National Orchestra. Conductors include Vladimir Fedosejev, Iona Brown, Juri Bashmet, Jukka Pekka Saraste and John Storgards.
He has toured extensively in Most European countries, USA and Japan and has performed with a numerous group of musicians including: Nobuko Imai, Leonidas Kavakos, Peter Nagy, Joanna MacGregor, Håvard Gimse, Charles Neidich and Ivry Gitlis.
Birkeland has for more than a decade been involved in the instrument market and is the pioneering founder of the Norwegian instrument collection Dextra Musica, which is built up in collaboration with The Savingsbank Foundation DnB. Birkeland is now well established as an independent consultant in fine instruments and bows and has for many years collaborated extensively with J&A Beare in London and Bunkyo Gakki in Tokyo.
